Our History

30 years
from Africa to Switzerland

Since 1994, Inside Africa Akwaaba has served as a living bridge between the African continent and French-speaking Switzerland — thirty years of faith, perseverance, excellence and impact.

The founding narrative

Two founders, a dream come true family business

Having arrived in Switzerland in the early 1990s, Mike and Rosena Davis turned their dream into a family business which, over the years, has become a leading name in the distribution of African products.

Before opening their first shop, they started out by taking part in markets, fairs and events across Switzerland. Thanks to their determination, hard work and the trust of their customers, they have gradually grown their business and now operate several outlets in French-speaking Switzerland.

«We had a deep faith in God, great determination and a desire to build something lasting for our family and our community.»

Akan language, Ghana

Akwaaba

«Akwaaba» means «Welcome». Derived from the Akan language of Ghana, this word perfectly encapsulates the company’s identity: to welcome everyone with warmth, respect and authenticity, whilst inviting them to discover Africa from the inside.

For three decades, Inside Africa Akwaaba has been opening its doors to all communities in a spirit of sharing, discovery and intercultural dialogue.

The Nhyira Swiss–Africa Foundation

For Mike and Rosena Davis, success is not measured solely by the growth of a business. Having themselves come from humble beginnings, they wanted to give back to their community by providing the tools to pass on knowledge, create opportunities and make a positive contribution to society.

Through its educational, social and cultural programmes, the foundation works to provide more opportunities for disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people in Ghana.
